'Kids today don't make a distinction between the screens they're playing on', says Insomniac boss

‘Most successful developers will be on all platforms’

The most successful developers in the next few years will be those that work on all gaming formats, Insomniac’s CEO has claimed.

Speaking to gamesindustry international, Ted Price said that children no longer make the distinction between their gaming platforms, and want to be able to play games wherever they are.

The Resistance developer last year opened its online games division, Insomniac Click, describing the studio’s expansion as a “pragmatic necessity” as the number of gaming platforms were diversifying faster than ever.

“There are so many opportunities for players to get their entertainment now, so many different terrains – I think the winners are going to be those IP that exist on as many screens as possible,” said Price.

"I think the kids today don’t make a distinction between the screens they’re playing on, whether it’s a phone, a tablet, a TV, PC; they want their entertainment everywhere all the time. And I think the most successful developers in the future will be those who can provide that."

Price also said that with the boon in independent development tools and games, more and more young developers were entering the business, making it an exciting future for the industry over the next five-to-ten years.

"The nice thing is that there are so many new developers getting into the market thanks to the proliferation of games and just the tools that kids can use to make their own games,” said Price.

“So I think we have a huge upcoming crop of fledgling developers that are going to hit the industry in about five-to-ten years that’s going to be mind-numbing. It’s going to be really cool for all of us.”
