A seed funding round has seen Motorious Entertainment receive $566,000 towards its next titles.

The studio will develop three free-to-play games for iOS and Android based on the BBC's Top Gear franchise, starting with match-three puzzler Top Gear: The Road Trip, Pocket Gamer reports. This will be followed by Top Gear Adventures in 2017.

Funding for the Helsinki-based startup came from two unnamed Nordic investment companies.

Motorious is headed up by CEO and creative director Jani Pauna, who previously served as editor-in-chief for the Finnish-language version of the Top Gear TV series.

"The brand is very familiar to me and I understand the essence of the IP, which is about so much more than cars," he said.

"Our investors were impressed with how we have developed a game series that fits so well with its world famous IP and with our co-operation with BBC Worldwide, which will grant us valuable access to promote the game in all of the BBC's Top Gear channels."
