A new kind of game engine from Finnish studio Rocket Pack is compatible on a wide variety of devices, from iPad to Android phones, to netbooks, Macs, PCs and iPhones.
The Rocket Engine is an in-browser game development platform that requires no downloads, no installs nor plug-ins, with everything connected to the cloud.
To clarify such a bold promise, Rocket Pack co-founder Jiri Kupiainen told Develop today that no data is downloaded into a device which operates it – everything is exchanged from the game editor and Rocket Pack’s own servers.
In fact, the firm tells Develop it has nearly finalised the engine but won’t roll-out an offline mode until a later date when completed.
Developers can upload their own assets to the servers which then can be used in the editor.
Kupiainen says the new tech is a world first.
When the engine launches later this year, developers can use the tech through their iPads, netbooks, and home computers.
“Because it’s all based online, we can of course get the engine running on iPhone and Android phones”, says Kupiainen, “but at the moment we’re figuring out how to get an engine UI to fit properly on small mobile phone screens.”
There will likely be multiple licence agreements tied to the engine – and Rocket Pack hopes to emulate the indie-friemdly credentials of Unity.
“Fairly certain there will be a free version for people to mess around with,” says Kupiainen. “We actually like it if people get to mess around with our engine and make stuff not for commercial purposes.”
