Korean online developer and publisher Nexon is bringing Square Enix’s MMO Final Fantasy XI to mobile.
FFXI was originally released in 2002 for PC and PlayStation 2, followed by an Xbox 360 version in 2006 – the console’s first such MMO.
The console servers for the game were shut down on March 31st of this year, following the release of a final expansion pack almost exactly one year ago.
The game’s mantle has been largely taken up by spiritual successor Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which launched in 2013 for PS3, PS4 and PC.
However, FFXI is now being given a fresh breath of life in the form of a mobile reboot, created by MapleStory and Dungeon Fighter Online outlet Nexon.
Although solid details remain scarce, initial screenshots show a UI favouring touch controls, as well as a virtual on-screen analog stick.
