No Prey for No Matter Studios after ZeniMax trademark claim

Indie developer No Matter Studios have changed the name of their current project to Praey for the Gods, to avoid a trademark dispute with ZeniMax.

The parent company of Bethesda, who is publishing the game Prey developed by Arkane Studios, opposed the title due to their trademark for the upcoming Prey release.

Praey for the Gods was originally named Præy for the Gods, but was changed to Prey for the Gods due to the æ symbol not being user friendly. The survival adventure game raised over $500,000 during its 2016 Kickstarter campaign but didn’t want to spend that cash on legal disputes.

Speaking in a newsletter, the three person team from No Matter Studios said, ""We could’ve fought this and we did think about it for quite a while. Something like a trademark opposition can be long and depending on how far someone wants to fight it can be very expensive. We didn’t want to spend our precious Kickstarter funds, nor did we want to have to ask for additional funds to fight this in court."

ZeniMax have previous history in trademark litigation with one of the most well known actions being against Minecraft developer Mojang over their game, Scrolls, which shut down in June last year.
