Notch offers $13 million funding for Psychonauts 2

Minecraft developer Markus Persson has offered $13 million to fund a new Psychonauts game, according to reports.

Speaking to Kotaku, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer, hot on the heels of his kickstarter success for a new adventure game, said Persson was serious about the offer for a sequel to the 2005 platformer.

"I was like, ‘I don’t think you can make it for a million dollars,’” said Schafer.

“The original game was, I think, $13 million, I think you have to match the original game.

"As soon as I mentioned the amount of money he said, ‘Yeah, I can do that.’"

Schafer said though that whether or not Persson is involved with Psychonauts 2, he would like to collaborate with the famous indie developer on a new game.

"He’s been pretty successful. And, when you look into it, it’s a really inspiring story. He’s just a regular guy,” said Schafer.

”He didn’t do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it’s a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I’d like to do something with him. And I’d like to make Psychonauts 2.”

The offer comes after Double Fine has struggled to find a publisher to back the Psychonauts sequel, despite its plans to expand the franchise after the original’s troubled development.

"We had a lot of plot elements that were backstory in that first game that we planned on revisiting in the future and tying it back in," he said.

"We had a longer story arc planned for those characters."
