The retail launch of Nvidia's Shield handheld console has been delayed due to a mechanical issue.

The Shield is an Android based, tegra 4-powered device capable of playing games on a 720p HD retinal display.

Originally slated to hit shelves this Thursday at $299 USD, the manufacturer has now pushed the commercial release back by a month due to "a mechanical issue that relates to a third-party component".

“We want Shield to be perfect, so we have elected to shift the launch date,” reads a statement from Nvidia.

While the company isn't going into much detail, it has told Engadget that the problem component is internal.

Nvidia has promised to reveal the new shipping date in July.
