Nvidia invests in anti-motion sickness tech for VR

Also rolls out GameWorks VR SDKs to registered developers

Graphics firm Nvidia is dedicating more time and resources to virtual reality development, with a new partnership to help reduce motion sickness and focus issues in VR tech.

The company is working with California-based Stanford University on the new technology that centres around using two layered displays within the same headset, according to Gamasutra. This creates a sense of depth, reducing the risk of motion sickness, and could be implemented into VR headsets within three to five years.

“"Almost all of the VR setups are pretty uncomfortable to use if it’s within arm’s reach because of depth cues like stereo and accommodation,” said David P. Luebke, senior director of research at Nvidia. 

“This is because of the vergence-accommodation conflict, which is how much the lens of your eye has to change to bring sharp focus to your retina.”

Meanwhile, Gamasutra also reports that Nvidia has begun rolling out software development kits for GameWorks VR, the company’s own virtual reality development tools.
