There are many naysayers about the potential of free-to-play as a business model on home consoles, but PlayStation isn’t one of them.
During a presentation at GDC 2015 in San Francisco, Sony’s Sarah Thompson said she expected freemium games to account for a “big chunk” of the platform holder’s digital revenue, according to GameSpot.
Thompson – who is Sony’s senior account executive for PlayStation’s free-to-play business – claimed that the impressive growth seen by free-to-play titles on PlayStation so far has been more than encouraging.
“We’re really looking at this as a significant part of our digital business,” she told attendees. “I think that it’s going to be a really big chunk of our revenues in the next few years; three to five years. And it’s already growing at amazing rates that are really quite surprising.”
Also on the panel was Laura Naviaux, SVP of sales and marketing at Daybreak Game Company – a firm formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment until the corporation sold it. She predicted a prosperous future for free-to-play on all consoles.
“It’s sort of just the first layer of the onion,” she said. “Every indication is that there is a tremendous amount of opportunity for growth with free-to-play on consoles.”
