Need For Speed is taking a year out from traditional games devices, instead opting for a brand new mobile game from the studio behind the Real Racing series.
EA-owned Australian dev Firemonkeys is currently working on Need For Speed: No Limits, which will be released "soon" for smartphones and tablets.
The team is also working with Ken Block, an American rally driver that assisted with the development of Colin McRae Dirt 2 and 3.
2014 will be the first year since 1996 that EA has not released a new NFS title on home consoles, according to MCV.
No Limits' executive producer Robert Huebner said "We've built No Limits from the ground up to deliver the insanely-fast driving and incredible graphics that fans have come to expect from Need For Speed – all in the palm of your hand.
"The team at Firemonkeys has also been bringing Need For Speed to mobile gamers for years, and it's an honour and a privilege to once again get behind the wheel of this incredible franchise and redefine street racing on mobile."
