US company looks to reverse decline in games business with acqusition

RealNetworks buys social casino dev Slingo for $15m

Media firm RealNetworks has acquired casual and social casino game developer Slingo for $15.6 million.

The studio’s main IP, which uses the same name, is a social slot machine and bingo title that attracts 4.5 million users each month on Facebook.

RealNetworks, which develops RealPlayer and has its own games division, said the company is currently developing new versions of the game for Facebook, iOS and Android.

The acquisition follows the news earlier this year that the company’s gaming arm had made $13.9m in the three months ending March 31st, a decrease of 27 per cent year-on-year.

"We are thrilled to have acquired Slingo, one of the most beloved products and brands in social casino gaming," said RealNetworks interim CEO Rob Glaser.

"We look forward to bringing Slingo – an extremely fun combination of slots and bingo – to even more fans around the world. Our team is hard at work creating even more compelling new versions of Slingo for Facebook, iPhone, iPad and Android."
