Remedy considering return to multiplayer development after 20 years

But creative director Sam Lake insists that studio’s focus remains on “story and storytelling”

Remedy could be set to create its first multiplayer game since the Quantum Break dev’s debut release two decades ago.

Death Rally was released on MS-DOS in 1996, and marked both the first and last time a Remedy game featured support for multiple players.

Subsequent titles – notably, the Max Payne and Alan Wake franchises – have been single-player only affairs.

Creative director Sam Lake said on the Major Nelson podcast that the studio has considered returning to multiplayer, but that the developer’s focus remains on “story and storytelling”.

“In various forms, we have tried kind of combining different mediums since Max Payne,” he said (via DualShockers). “It was kind of a graphic novel, and with Alan Wake it was a novel, and now it’s a TV show.

“Trying to do these experiments with different mediums is definitely part of it. You know, we do have a lot of discussions, obviously.

"Certainly, there are discussions about multiplayer. There are discussions about all kinds of ideas. We want to evolve with the times as well, try out new things that push ourselves and always come back and question: 'What is a Remedy game and how can we evolve it into something even cooler?'”

“A lot of this is happening all the time. So far we haven’t done that. Sometimes it has been maybe considered and sometimes not even in the discussions but, you know, we’ll see what will be the next iteration for a Remedy game.”
