Unity boss John Riccitiello says his firm’s engine has become the ‘go to’ tool for virtual reality developers.

Speaking during his opening keynote at this week’s Unite Europe conference in Amsterdam, he championed Unity’s support for all major VR platforms, adding to the 21 platforms the tech already supports.

“You can’t find a VR platform – even ones with their own engine – where most of the games aren’t built on Unity,” he claimed.

The rest of his keynote re-emphasised Unity’s three key principles: democratising games development, helping developers solve hard problems and enabling them to make their games a success.

For the latter, the firm brought out experts from Unity Ads and Unity Analytics to discuss more of the features that will be added to Unity 5.0 in the near future.

Riccitiello also reminded attendees of the impact the launch of Unity 5.0 has had, pointing to the change in pricing where the Personal Edition is now available to free.

“We want developers around the world to feel that they’re on the same platform as triple-A studios,” he said, adding that the engine gives devs the tools to “aspire” to make better games.

“We’re trying to turn the world into a world of creators.”
