Monkey Island creator sets sail for new adventures on iOS

Ron Gilbert leaves Double Fine

Ron Gilbert has finished his work at Double Fine and will be leaving the studio.

The creator of Monkey Island joined forces with former LucasArts crewmember Tim Schafer at his San Francisco studio to work on the platforming adventure title: The Cave.

With that game finished, Gilbert is departing to "plot my next move".

"I want to thank all the amazing people at Double Fine for all their hard work on The Cave," wrote Gilbert in a blog post.

"It was a true pleasure to work with every one of them over the past two years. So much fun. I will miss them all. And of course to Tim for creating the opportunity to come there and make The Cave."

While his long term plans are uncertain, Gilbert says he’s been working on an iOS game with Clayton Kauzlaric and will spend the next three months or so on that project.

The title is a mouthful – Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG – and harkens back to some of Gilbert’s most memorable titles.

Before working at Double Fine, Gilbert did a brief stint at Hothead Games, where he worked on Death Spank.
