First masters in games development in London to be accredited

Skillset endorses Goldsmiths’ MSc games course

Goldsmiths College’s computing department has been officially certified by Creative Skillset for its MSc in Computer Games and Entertainment.

Creative Skillset is an industry body that accesses courses and training for the creative industries. The Skillset Tick is a signpost that helps students choose programmes that have been approved by the creative industries.

It indicates that a programme has undergone thorough assessment, including a review of graduate employment, work experience and links with the industry.

“The Tick validates our commitment to providing a programme that flows through into the games industry and is in tune with industry needs, giving our students the launch pad they need to start successful careers,” said Professor William Latham, co-director and co-founder of the MSc Computer Games and Entertainment at Goldsmiths.

Professor Frederic Fol Leymarie, co-director and co-founder of the MSc Computer Games and Entertainment, added: “The programme is the first masters level to be accredited in the Greater London area. The MSc in Computer Games and Entertainment equips students with skills and experience they need to hit the ground running.”

In 2012, Goldsmiths’ MSc in Computer Games and Entertainment experienced a record year for student placements, which included Ideaworks, Splash Damage, Supermassive Games, M&C Saatchi, We R Interactive, Roll7, Climax Studios, Hand Circus and student games physics projects with Havok Intel.

The programme has attracted partnerships with UK developer Rebellion, advertising agency M&C Saatchi and the National Film and Television School (NFTS).

The inclusion of Goldsmiths’ masters programme now brings the total number of Skillset accredited games courses in the UK to 16. Those courses exist at just 11 higher education institutes so far.
