Sony has gone into details on some of the exact specifications powering its newly unveiled PlayStation 4 console.
Underlying the new hardware will be a custom chip that contains eight AMD x86-64 cores.
The GPU, as previously speculated, will contain 18 compute units which can generate 1.84 teraflops of processing power. This can be freely applied to graphics, simulation tasks or a mixture of the two.
The PS4 will also come packed with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, giving the console 176GB/second of bandwidth.
This is up from the 4GB of RAM previously speculated, and may have been changed due to the suspected amount of RAM contained in Microsoft’s next Xbox.
As well as the system’s core specs, Sony also revealed that the PS4 would allow for cross-platform play, with users able to access content from mobile, tablet and Vita.
Gaikai will also play a central role in the new hardware following Sony’s $380 million acquisition of the company last year, enabling the Vita to act as a client to play PS4 games on, with the PS4 essentially acting as a server.
Gaikai CEO David Perry said that their long-term goal was “to make every PS4 game playable on the PS Vita”.
As mentioned numerous times on the night, Sony said it had created the hardware with developers in mind and “specifically to their needs”, allowing for a more open system than the PS3.
