Well over half a million backers funding ongoing development of space sim

Star Citizen funding at $50m and counting

More than $50 million has been donated to Cloud Imperium Games for the development of upcoming space exploration title Star Citizen.

One of the most high-profile examples of crowd-funding, the title has now generated $51,075,243 from 525,131 backers, according to the game’s website

That’s an increase of $10m in the last six months, suggesting the seemingly endless flow of cash could be slowing slightly when you think that the studio received $4m in two months at the tail end of last year.

Interestingly, Cloud Imperium has yet to announce another stretch goal, indicating that maybe the team has run out of new ships, planets and bonus features to add. The stretch goal for $50m (if you’re interested) was the introduction of alien languages, created with the help of real-world linguists.

Regardless of whether or not more content is offered, with a budget of $50m Star Citizen is shaping up to be one of the most comprehensive titles of its genre. Now all it needs is a release date.
