Cryptic Studio’s Star Trek Online MMO has officially gone free-to-play, the company has announced.

The developer revealed it was preparing for the move last November, and the dropping of a subscription based pay model puts Star Trek in line with it’s other MMO’s such as Champions Online: Free For All and City of Heroes.

The game can now be accessed for free by anyone, whilst there is also a ‘Gold Members’ subscription available for $14.99 a month, which allows users to create guilds and opens up extra character slots.

Players can also still buy items from the in-game C-Store, although the company said it will be reviewing the content and prices of the goods on offer.

Many online multiplayer games have adopted the free-to-play model over the last year, including titles such as Team Fortress 2, DC Universe and All Points Bulletin.

APB publisher GameFirst announced last month that after ditching subscriptions for the game’s remake, its registered user base had surpassed three million within a week.
