Swedish publisher Starbreeze has promoted its chief technology officer to its management team.

Emmanuel Marquez joined the company in 2014, having previously worked as a senior manager at AMD. He has since been heading up Starbreeze’s engineering team, and is also in charge of the firm’s hardware and software offering for its StarVR and Valhalla game engine tech.

As part of the management team, he will have a greater input on the company’s overall strategic direction.

Starbreeze has made a number of big announcements during the last year. In June it unveiled its virtual reality headset StarVR. The hardware was built in collaboration with French company InfinitEye, which the publisher acquired for $2m.

In May it opened up a new publishing arm for digital games, and invested $8m Croatia studio Lion Game Lion.

During the same month, the firm purchased the Valhalla game engine in a deal worth $8.6m. It’s set to be used in its VR projects and will power The Walking Dead, Storm and other titles.

Prior to this, last year Starbreeze acquired toys-to-life outfit Geminose for $7m.
