25 million installs of over 1,000 Cardboard-compatible apps achieved over the last 19 months

There are now more than five million Google Cardboard users

A year and a half after it launched, Google Cardboard has more than five million users and over 25 million app installs.

Google has revealed the latest statistics for its $20 (£14) DIY VR headset, which uses a combination of lenses and a chassis made of the titular material to offer a low-fi way of experiencing virtual reality.

More than 1,000 Cardboard-compatible apps have been launched on Google Play during its 19 months of lifetime, with five million users contributing to 25 million installs in total.

10 million installs took place from October to December alone.

The most popular Cardboard app to date is Chair in a Room, with Vrse, Lamper VR: Firefly Rescue, Caaaard-board! and Proton Pulse also making the Top 5.

YouTube is among the existing apps to have Cardboard VR support added. More than 350,000 hours of the online video service have been watched in VR to date.

In addition, the VR photography app Cardboard Camera has been used to take over 750,000 virtual reality images.
