Study shows UK swept in smartphone craze; Gaming becomes fastest growing online activity

Third of Brits ‘use smartphones’

Around one third of UK adults use smartphones, according to a comprehensive new report published by Ofcom.

Booming popularity in mobile devices has resulted in a dramatic rise in mobile internet use, the report added.

And, in terms of total online activity, the fastest growing activity is gaming. Between April 2010 and 2011, online gaming grew 23 per cent, the report claimed.

The huge surge of interest in mobile and smartphones offer game developers an opportunity to capitalise. Smartphone and social games are routinely cited as the fastest growth areas in gamoing.

The Ofcom survey found that Apple’s iPhone remains the most popular smartphone overall, though Blackberry devices were said to be the most popular for teenagers.

Ofcom’s annual Communications Market Report said the smartphone user market is evenly split between males and females, with men edging ahead at 58 per cent.

Ofcom’s widely cited data was compiled through a survey of 2,481 adults with access to broadband.
