Less than 20 per cent of studios working on PS3 and Xbox 360; Unity used by 62 per cent of devs

Three quarters of UK developers making games for mobile

Over 70 per cent of developers in the UK are making games for mobile, according to a survey conducted by TIGA and ARM.

The UK industry trade body asked 100 developers what platforms they were developing for, and 73 per cent said they worked on iPad games and 72 per cent on iPhone titles. 63 per cent of developers said they make games for PC, and 62 per cent for Android.

Consoles meanwhile were low on UK studios’ radars, with just 18 per cent developing games for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Xbox One proved more popular than PS4, with 17 per cent making titles for Microsoft’s console and 15 per cent developing on Sony’s new-gen hardware.

Despite this however, 52 per cent of those surveyed said they intended to develop for Xbox One in future, and 48 per cent plan to work on the PS4.

Fewer studios claimed they intend to work on PC and Apple devices in future, with a 15 per cent drop on PC, and iPhone and iPad down seven and eight per cent.

The survey also asked which game engines were the most popular amongst UK developers, with 62 per cent choosing Unity.

The second most popular choice of engine was in-house tech, while Unreal Engine is being used by 12 per cent of studios in the UK. Despite this, 23 per cent of developers said they intend to use Epic’s development platform in future, the largest rise of any engine.
