Tencent managed 13% all by itself

Top 10 grossing games companies made 54% of games markets revenues in 2016

A new report claims that the top 10 public games companies have generated 54% of the entire global games market’s revenue in 2016.

This report comes courtesy of Newzoo, which has just released details on the top 25 public game companies in 2016, taking into account PC, console and mobile markets.

Tencent topped the chart with $10.2b revenue in 2016, buoyed by its acquisition of big-earner Supercell. The pair generated 13% of the global games market’s revenues in 2016.

The top ten public games companies produced 54% of the entire global games market’s revenue for the whole year.

Sony ($7.88b) and Activision Blizzard ($6.6) swung in to take the second and third spots, with Microsoft, Apple, EA, Netease, Google, Bandai Namco and Nintendo filling in the rest of the top 10. This is good news for Netease, named by Newzoo as the fastest growing company in the top 25 after it grew its revenues by 50% year-on-year.

Nintendo hung on in the top 10, the only company at the top to see declining revenues. However, with the success of the Switch, Newzoo have said they expect to see Nintendo’s luck turn around.
