A pair of former staffers from LEGO Star Wars studio Traveller’s Tales have opened a new studio together.
Chris Payne and Ralph Ferneyhough joined TT Games in 2000 and 2001 respectively, helping to launch the first LEGO Star Wars game – on which Ferneyhough was part of the core design team – and going on to work on a further 12 entries in the developer’s LEGO franchise.
Now, they have reunited to launch Quantum Soup, a studio based in North Wales which will work on original IP for a variety of platforms. Both directors are co-founders of Games Wales North.
Quantum Soup was formed in partnership with Welsh TV company S4C, which is the only Welsh-language broadcaster in the world and has previously explored development with education games and apps.
Quantum Soup isn’t the first studio founded by ex-members of Traveller’s Tales – PawPrint Games and Parallel Circles were both formed by alumni from the developer.
“We’ve been mentoring local talent as the northern arm of the Games Wales group for several years,” said Payne. “So it’s very exciting to be taking our own advice and starting a studio here to create our own games.”
