Developing engine’s 2D tech has become “one of Unity’s top priorities”

Unity Pro users get early access to new 2D tools

Unity Technologies has granted Pro users access to the alpha version of its upcoming 2D games development tools.

The alpha build gives developers a chance to explore the tile map editor, Smart Sprite, masking, 9-slice sprites and other features.

You can find out more about the current alpha from Unity’s Bitbucket repo. Each new release will be posted there, as well as early versions of tech demos, prototyping tools and draft documentation.

“Developing our 2D offering has become one of Unity’s top priorities,” wrote Unity’s Paul Tham on the company’s blog. “We’ve expanded our team, and there are now many new faces working on building some exciting features.

“We’ve also thought a lot about the way we organise what the 2D Team does, and how we can ensure that we get more feedback at an earlier stage of development. To that end, we now have our own dedicated alpha shipping cycle.”
