UK indie launches YouTube series for first-time developers

VIDEO: Gunpoint dev Tom Francis teaches newcomers to make games

Tom Francis, former games journalist and developer behind indie hit Gunpoint, is helping aspiring game-makers with no coding experience learn how to develop games.

His new YouTube series, catchily titled Make A Game With No Experience, talks viewers through the step by step process of programming a game from scratch. You can view the first episode below or find the full series here.

Francis demonstrates development techniques using Game Maker Studio, the same software he used for Gunpoint. The Standard version of YoYo Games dev suite, as he points out, is currently available for free.

The indie dev also uploads the source code for each of his tutorials to a public Dropbox link, allowing viewers to see how each one works.

The first video – Writing your first code – demonstrates how to make a room and a controllable sprite. Part two – Shooting, therefore videogames – introduces basic top-down aiming and shooting mechanics.
