Black Anvil Games has been shuttered following an internal reshuffle at German outfit Wooga, which saw the firm cut 40 jobs and refocus on casual games.

The studio was first announced in March 2016 and was made up of developers that would focus on midcore strategy titles after being spun out of the core Wooga team and given the money and space to develop their own projects.

The first of these was strategy game Warlords, which launched at the end of September, and it was believed that Black Anvil would escape the cuts at its parent company due to the continuing updates and fixes that'd be required for the strategy title. However, PocketGamer.Biz has reported that a source has confirmed the closure of the company, and also that Wilhilm Oesterberg, the former head of the studio, is no longer at the company.

"We’re very proud of the work the Black Anvil team did with Warlords, creating a high quality strategy game with a great amount of depth and content," said a Wooga spokesperson to PocketGamer.biz.

"Given Wooga’s recent decision to focus exclusively on creating hit casual mobile games, Warlords will be Black Anvil’s final game.

"As a result, we’ve mutually parted ways with Black Anvil’s Head of Studio, Wilhelm Österberg. Wilhelm guided the Warlords team through to launch and helped deliver a great game and we wish him all the best with his future endeavours."
