Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter surpasses £2m

Nearly 70,000 backers pledge support for spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie

Playtonic’s crowdfunding campaign for 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee has surpassed £2m on its final day.

With eight hours left to go, the game’s Kickstarter has now hit its final stretch goal to provide free DLC to backers.

At the time of writing, Playtonic had raised £2,023,935 from 69,910 backers. The project is the most successful UK Kickstarter campaign ever for a video game, surpassing previous record holder Elite: Dangerous.

Created by ex-Rare developers as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee is a 3D platformer in which players take control of two characters, a chameleon named Yooka and a bat named Laylee.

Crowfunding for the title began on May 1st, and hit its funding goal of £175,000 in less than an hour. It then went on to raise $1m in just five hours and 41 minutes.
