Digital games sales up 5% as The Division claims console and PC top spots

$6.2bn was generated from digital game sales in the month of March, research firm SuperData says.

The firm says this is a five per cent rise year-on-year. Over on digital console, Ubisoft’s The Division was the best-selling digital release for the month.

The online shooter takes pole position from Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III. That title settles for second place ahead of EA’s FIFA 16.

The Division was also the best-selling title on PC, too.

Over in the mobile ranks, Supercell’s new release Clash Royale takes the top spot ahead of its other best-selling title, Clash of Clans.

Digital game sales are up five per cent year-on-year in April, totalling $6.2B. Digital console again sees the fastest growth of any segment for both revenue (up 23 per cent) and audience (up 15 per cent),” the firm said.

Mobile, free-to-play MMO and digital PC also show YoY growth in revenue and monthly active users as digital full game downloads and free-to-play games take market share from physical games. Social gaming revenue continues to decline (-10% YoY) as casual gamers increasingly shift to mobile devices.”

It continued: Sales of The Division skyrocket, seizing the top spot from Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Excitement pushed sales to over $109 million, making Tom Clancy’s The Division the highest grossing digital console title in March, $48 million ahead of runner-up Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Black Ops III’s 17 per cent month-over-month revenue decrease means The Division siphoned off attention and spending from Call of Duty fans”
