The industry may feel like it is more mobile-centric than ever, but it’s actually the PC that led the way in terms of digital revenues last year.
The latest report by SuperData Research shows that the downloadable PC games market earned over $32bn last year – significantly more than the $25.1bn earned by mobile games. This includes premium titles, free-to-play and subscription-based MMOs, and social games.
Even the combined earnings of the Top 10 downloadable PC games surpassed the Top 10 mobile games of 2015, with the two figures coming in at $6.3bn and $6.18bn respectively.
The titles in both Top 10 lists are all familiar suspects, with League of Legends, CrossFire and Dungeon Fighter Online leading the way on PC and mobile headlined by Clash of Clans, Game of War and Puzzle & Dragons.
Supercell’s appearance – book-ending the highest earning mobile charts with Clash at No.1 and Boom Beach at No.10 – will come as no surprise. The success of these two games propelled the studio to the No.1 spot in the recent Develop 100, listing the world’s most bankable studios.
Meanwhile the downloadable revenues consoles were considerably lower, with retail still dominating this market. In fact, both League of Legends and Clash of Clans generated more digital revenue than Call of Duty, FIFA, Grand Theft Auto and Destiny combined.
