$600,000 Overwatch Premier Series heads to China

A massive $600,000 is being committed to the Overwatch Premier Series over in China.

Blizzard’s decision to announce the Overwatch League incredibly early on in the preparation stage has somewhat backfired, as outside of the APEX league over in Korea there has been a significant lack of competition in the scene. With a new publisher lead event just months away organisers see little value in hosting Overwatch competitions and it is massively hurting the scene.

However over in China the Overwatch Premier Series promises to change that at least for Chinese players. Blizzard and organisers Banana Culture have committed $600,000 to the year long competition that starts on March 16th. Two seasons will see the best Chinese players compete against each other, hoping to book a slot in the grand finals towards the end of the year. After that the best four teams from the competition will play against international teams from all regions in the APAC Premier tournament.

The competition will be restricted to Chinese residents, with an official ID card required to sign up.

While it’s not exactly the news EU and NA teams were hoping for it is a start, and gives hope that maybe there can be some good competition before Blizzard finally gets round to starting the Overwatch League.
