League of Legend’s Riot Points are about to get a price hike in the UK, thanks to Brexit

League of Legends fans in the UK are being hit with a price hike, after Riot has confirmed it’ll raise the price of Riot Points in the country as a result of Brexit.

The price hike will kick into effect on 25 July, where people looking to escape the harsh realities of Brexit Britain by jumping into a digital fantasy land will find Riot Points are roughly 20 per cent more expensive. Riot Points are the in game currency for the title, allowing players to buy characters, outfits and other cosmetic items.

In a real sense, players won’t notice a difference in the price they’re paying, but the exchange rate from pounds to Riot Points will mean players have less bang for their buck. The biggest blow here is that the £5 tier, which used to give you enough to buy a skin at 975RP, will now award 790RP. The £10 tier gives you 1650RP, with will let you buy a 975RP skin and leave you with 675RP left over, so to buy a second skin you’ll have to buy a £5 top up to have what you need.

Buyting two skins will now cost you £15, when before it would have cost you £10, ultimately.

Here are the new price points, how many Riot Points they would have snagged you, and how  much you’ll get now. The £2.50 point has been ditched, with Riot claiming players didn’t use it enough. A new £15 tier has been added .

  • Price – previous RP – New RP
  • £5 – 975RP – 790 RP
  • £10 – 2075RP – 1650RP
  • £15 – N/A =  2525RP
  • £20 – 4200RP – 3350RP

The move was announced in a blog post from Riot.

"Last June, the UK voted to leave the European Union, triggering a drop in the value of the pound relative to other global currencies, particularly the US dollar," he said. "This change meant that while UK players were spending the same number of pounds on RP as before, players elsewhere in the world were paying a lot more in comparison."

The actual value of what RP will get you hasn’t changed, and the prices will remain pre-Brexit until July 25, so if you were looking to buy a wedge of Riot Points, now would be the time, it appears.
