Samsung Galaxy defeat SKT 3-0 to win at Worlds

Giantkillers Samsung Galaxy have won the League of Legends Worlds tournament, clutching victory over SK Telecom T1 (SKT) in a 3-0 sweep.

Samsung Galaxy (SSG) had the toughest of brackets, defeating favourites Longzhou Gaming in the quarter-final matchup 3-0, before cruising to victory against SKT. Their victory wins them around $1.7m in prize money, although that number could increase with crowdfunding in the near future. They also get to hold the Summoner’s Cup, marking their achievement.

SSG have had an incredibly strong run to the finals, while SKT nearly fell against Misfits in the quarter-final match, so the way things have shaken out in the finals may not be completely unexpected, however the global scene has long held SKT to be the greatest team in the world, with widespread dominance. This win by Samsung Galaxy seems to draw that to an end.

This is the first series SKT has ever lost at Worlds, period. The team are three time defending world champions, and this time last year they beat SSG 3-2 in a close final. This year, Samsung sought out revenge.

Whether this means we’ll now see SSG enter a period of dominance, a period of flexibility in the meta or even just SKT coming back next year to win as part of a redemption story, this is a fascinating event in League of Legends history.
