Splyce are first UK team to win a major international COD tournament in the US

UK Call of Duty team Splyce have become the first UK team to win a major international in the US, defeating a perceived Call of Duty ‘curse’ which has seen UK teams struggle to make an impact outside of Europe.

They’re also the first European team to win any tournament located on US soil in the last seven years, with this being the first win for a european team since the 2010 Modern Warfare 2 Gamestop World Finals according to Esports News UK, where you can also find detailed match reports from the victory.

The team dragged themselves out of the group stages of the first-ever Global Pro League in second place, going up against Evil Geniuses. Peter Dager, Evil Geniuses’ CEO, tweeted “EU COD LUL” in response to the draw, before Splyce did what was seen as the impossible, and beat down the team.

They advanced to the final, where they had to face off against Luminosity Gaming, a well regarded and tough opponent, often regarded as one of the better team’s in competitive Call of Duty. To get there, Luminosity had to beat OpTic Gaming, themselves a top tier team.

Still, as Luminosity had reached the final through the loser’s bracket, Splyce had the advantage. Luminosity had to win two series to Splyce’s 1 to lift the trophy. The dream was starting to seem real. At the end of the first series, to cap off a 5-5 Search and Destroy map, Splyce won out, earning themselves the historic victory.

It’s a huge boost both to the EU Call of Duty scene, but also to Splyce’s UK-based Call of Duty roster.
