Unique game engine to power cross-platform experiences

Ex-49Games devs form new HTML5 studio

Former 49Games heads Jan-Hendrik Ohl and Peter Cukierski have formed a new studio called Hexagon Game Labs.

Based in Hamburg, the independent developer will focus on free-to-play online games in HTML5, using the company’s proprietary Ubique game engine.

The studio said that with its new development platform and cloud technology, users would be able to play the same game on multiple devices.

Hexagon is currently developing a title for tablets, smartphones, PCs, consoles and Smart TVs using the start-up’s new game engine.

“With Hexagon Game Labs, our mission is to leverage the idea of a flexible and barrier-free, multi-device usage of modern F2P games,” said Ohl.

“Thanks to our revolutionary ‘Ubique Game Engine,’ platform-independent premium games have now become a reality. Our games will convince players through their ability to transition seamlessly between different gaming devices, and revolutionise the way we look at cross-platform gaming.”

Sports entertainment outfit 49Games was acquired by online games provider Bigpoint in September 2011.
