Facebook Credits go mainstream

Facebook’s virtual currency is now available in more countries worldwide following the introduction of 20 new payment methods.

The online social network has partnered with monetisation service PlaySpan to allow users to buy Facebook Credits in different ways and in more currencies.

In the coming months Facebook will accept bank transfers, Asian MOL points, Target gift cards in the US, Paysafecards, Wallie cards, payments from Brazilian bank transfer service Boleto Bancario and more.

Users can use Facebook Credits to buy virtual goods such as new animals in Zynga’s popular Farmville game. Facebook takes 30 per cent of each transaction.

Since testing began on Facebook Credits in May 2009, the currency has been used in more than 200 games and applications by over 75 developers.

Facebook Credits product manager George Lee said on the Facebook developer blog: These payment options are designed to make it easier for all developers on Facebook to expand their international reach, attract a broader set of people to their games and applications, and grow their businesses.”

The social network is also urging more developers to use Facebook Credits in new games.
