Surprise release gets early success in US and UK

Fallout Shelter generating more money than Candy Crush Saga on App Store

Bethesda’s free-to-play mobile game Fallout Shelter has been generating more money on Apple’s App Store than Candy Crush Saga.

The game has risen to second spot on the App Store top grossing chart in the UK, usurping Candy Crush Saga. Clash of Clans remains in top spot. Fallout Shelter currently sits at third spot on the US App Store, with Candy Crush in fourth.

As VentureBeat notes, King’s flagship title was said to be making around $2.5m a day during the first three months of 2015. It should be noted however that Candy Crush Saga is available on multiple platforms, whereas Fallout Shelter has only been released on iOS. But given the popularity of Apple’s store, it offers an idea of just how well Bethesda’s game is performing in its early days.

“We’re very pleased. Fallout Shelter is doing amazingly well, with no real buildup,” said Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines.

“To take such a light approach to monetisation compared to other free-to-play games – we felt like we wanted to err on the side of caution and make it very unobtrusive, make sure it was fun first and foremost. So far so good.”

Fallout Shelter was a surprise announcement during Bethesda’s E3 press conference. Following the reveal, it was made available for download on the App Store. The game has performed remarkably well early on despite the lack of a soft-launch or prolonged marketing campaign.

Bethesda is currently working on an Android version of Fallout Shelter that is expected to be released in the next few months.
