Fast & Furious to star in free standalone Forza spin-off

Microsoft is launching a free version of Forza based on Universal’s Fast & Furious series.

AP reports that Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious will feature cars and missions inspired by the films and depict events that take place before the upcoming film. It will be built using the racing engine featured in last year’s open-world Forza title.

Interestingly, the game will be released for free on March 27th on both Xbox One and Xbox 360, around the same time the seventh film is released. It will be a standalone release and will not require Forza Horizon 2 to play.

However, after April 10th the game will cease to be free and cost $10 to download.

"We weren’t interested in doing yet another movie-based game," Turn 10 studio head Alan Hartman said. "That’s not what our franchise is about. When we started talking about this with Universal years ago, it was really about bringing both of our franchise’s strengths to the table. We’re building on top of everything we’ve done over the last decade."

"It’s kind of been a grand experiment. I hope what we’re doing here is a model for what we do in the future. It’s been a great relationship, and I don’t want to end it after this, so we’ll see what’s possible in the future."

Universal’s executive VP of digital licensing Bill Kispert added: "We’ve been talking with the folks at Turn 10 for a number of years and have always wanted to work together. It was a matter of schedules, capacity and a film coming together at the right time. It finally has, and we’re excited to collaborate with Turn 10."
