EA is injecting some new-ness into this year’s FIFA with the addition of a story mode called The Journey.
Following on from the likes of 2K’s NBA outing NBA 2K16, which featured a narrative penned by Spike Lee, FIFA 17 will boast a mode where users assume the role of Alex Hunter. The on-pitch play will restrict users to playing as Hunter, and off-field action will be interspersed with Mass Effect style dialogue options.
Real-life premier League stars will feature, too, including Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho (fresh from his appearance on-stage with Peter Moore at EA’s EA Play event last night). This coincides with the introduction of manager likenesses to the game, too.
The writing has also drawn on the help of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Eden Hazard. Being built this year on the Frostbite engine, the cut-scenes are very lifelike.
Players will have certain objectives for each appearance, such as hitting a certain performance rating or scoring a goal. Success or failure could lead them down various paths, such as clinching a big-club transfer or instead being farmed out on loan.
It’s not yet known how long it will take to exhaust the mode’s story options.
