The latest entry in the Final Fantasy series needs to shift more than 10 million units to be considered a success.
As reported by Kotaku UK, game director Hajime Tabata said at a press conference that Final Fantasy XV needs to hit this figure over its lifetime.
This is a hugely ambitious target when you consider that the best-performing entry in the Final Fantasy series – VII, which launched 19 years ago – has sold 11 million copies.
But you have to consider the fact that the appetite for RPGs is huge. The last reports about The Witcher 3’s sales placed them at six million, while 2011’s Skyrim sold 20 million copies.
And given that Final Fantasy XV has been in development for over ten years (it was first revealed in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII), it’s no wonder that Square has some big plans for the series to recoup the cost of making the game.
Square Enix is also going all-out to promote the game. On yesterday’s Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV livestream, the publisher unveiled that the RPG title would be launching alongside a film – Kings Glave – which features the vocal talents of Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean and Lena Headey, as well as Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame. That’s on top of an anime prequel entitled Brotherhood. And a one-of-a-kind Audi car.
What’s more – Square Enix is trying to hit the mainstream with its marketing. To promote the Uncovered livestream, the publisher bought ad space on a 120 square metre billboard in London’s Waterloo station.
