Planned release of next-gen console 'in next fiscal year'

Finished Wii U to showcase at E3 2012

Nintendo will showcase the finished version of the Wii U at E3 next year, president Satoru Iwata has said.

Iwata stated that the console gaming giant had learnt “bitter” lessons from the launch of the 3DS and will be taking lengths to ensure the Wii successor will not experience the same troubles.

“We would like to show the final format of the Wii U at the E3 show next year,” he said in the company’s semi-annual financial results briefing.

“As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch.”

Iwata also said Nintendo is planning to launch the Wii U during the next fiscal year, meaning it could see release before 2013.

The console giant reported a loss of £578 million on Friday for the six months ending September 30th, citing the fact that the 3DS had not met anticipated post-launch sales as a major factor for the company’s first annual loss in 30 years.

The E3 show is scheduled to take place between the 5th and 7th of June next year at the Los Angeles convention centre.
