After spending the majority of 2007 at the top of the Wii charts, it’s no surprise Wii Play manages to cross the finishing line first for the year in full. Sega’s Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games also does well to take second place after a relatively late release. Meanwhile, Nintendo displays its dominance on the format, taking seven positions.

After having its launch voted the best moment of the year in the MCV Reader Survey, Microsoft’s Halo 3 takes gold medal. Meanwhile, despite the success of old faithful franchises Call of Duty, FIFA and Halo, original IP titles also fared well, with high positions for Bioshock, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Gears of War, Crackdown, and Assassin’s Creed.

Its first year of sales saw PS3 fans lapping up Sony’s original IP duo Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm. The PS3 shows here the adoption of the hardcore gamer away from its older brother, with titles such as Assassin’s Creed and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune performing well, while more family orientated titles miss the top ten.

For a second year running the phenomenon that is Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training tops the bill on the DS, closely followed by sequel More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima. Both logic-based quizzes serve as a good model to represent the strength of the handheld as a format, since the DS-only titles managed to take the second and fifth spot in the main charts.

Football titles rule the roost on the PS2, as it experiences its first year in a long time not being the best-selling format. The success of FIFA 08 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 in the All Format Charts is reflected here, while the console’s gradual retirement into more family friendly and film tie-in titles is also evident.

Ahead of the release of the hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar’s GTA: Vice City Stories tops the PSP chart after claiming second place in the 2006 listings. Previous number one Liberty City Stories also does well to remain in the charts at number five. Overall, EA performed the best for the year, claiming four of the top ten games.
