Former Disney Infinity VP joins Gearbox for a secret project hoping to ‘delight gamers of all ages’

Former Disney Infinity VP, John Vignocchi, has joined Gearbox Publishing.

While Vignocchi has yet to confirm what project(s) he’s been assigned to, he has confirmed he’ll be serving the studio as an executive producer.

"Big news! Excited to announce I am joining the merry band of misfits at Gearbox Publishing," Vignocchi tweeted. "I’ll be taking the reins as Executive Producer on a new tent-pole franchise for the company!!!

"We will be working on something that we hope will surprise and delight gamers of all ages; whether you’re six or sixty… And I cannot wait to share more!"

Vignocchi was at Disney Interactive for seven years before moving to serve as VP of production for Disney Infinity in 2012. He stayed with the franchise until Disney shuttered its self-publishing games division in 2016. The closure of Infinity chiefly affected Avalanche and resulted in nearly 300 job losses.

Disney now operates a licensing model where other publishers can develop using its IP – such as EA with Star Wars Battlefront.

"I am humbled to join a company that has so many talented people in its ranks and honored to contribute to its legacy," Vignocchi added on a subsequent LinkedIn post.

"Thank you Randy for this amazing opportunity! Enough talk – Time to make some magic!"

Borderlands developer Gearbox recently released an internal case study to explains how the company develops its games with online services in mind. The study details Gearbox’s internal team ‘Spark’ and its Zeppelin tool, and how they work together to create the best online experience for players using cloud tools.
