Industry veteran heads to Epic three months after stepping down from Star Wars developer

Former LucasArts president Paul Meegan joins Epic

The former president of LucasArts has joined Gears of War developer Epic Games as VP of product development.

Paul Meegan has taken up the role at the studio’s headquarters in Cary, North Carolina, just over three months after he left his post at LucasArts.

Meegan joined the Star Wars developer in 2010 from Epic China, but left in August this year having led the studio through to revealing its work on Star Wars 1313, which received a rapturous reception when shown off at E3.

Meegan will now work on Epic’s executive team on the company’s latest projects.

“I’m really happy to be back in the Epic family and working with some of the best developers in the industry,” he said.

“Epic has demonstrated success in triple-A PC and console games, mobile entertainment and the engine technology business. Epic is well-positioned to grow and thrive in the years ahead. The company is stepping up its game across the board, and I’m honored to be a part of that process.”

Epic president Mike Capps added: “Epic’s business has evolved incredibly over the past two decades, and throughout that time, our hiring philosophy has remained constant: ‘hire the best and the brightest’.

“Paul’s been a friend of the Epic family for years, and we’re delighted to have him join the team. His experience and leadership will have a huge impact on our mission to deliver great games and great technology.”

Prior to re-joining Epic and serving a stint as president of LucasArts, Meegan has held numerous other roles at some of the world’s biggest developers.

In 1997 the industry veteran founded Sinister Games, which was later acquired by Ubisoft, at which point he moved to work at Ubisoft Montreal, where he oversaw projects such as Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield.

He has also previously worked at Epic China, and helped develop the Atlas MMO back-end technology framework for licensees.
