Studio says its formation would have been tougher without Prototype Fund

Future Fossil formed by Abertay grads

Future Fossil Studios, an new indie developer in Dundee, has been formed by graduates of Abertay University.

The group came together after graduating from their Mprof course in Games Development last year.

“Having worked in small teams for a year, we all felt that we wanted to keep that scale of development going, while enjoying the challenges presented in trying to establish ourselves,” director and designer Daniel Falconer told Develop.

“We applied to Abertay’s Prototype Fund in 2012 and moved into the prototyping space in January of this year. Without the support provided from the fund, it would have been a harder journey to where we are today and it has provided us a platform from which to move forward.”

Future Fossil is home to five founding members, as well as Falconer himself: Philip Barrowclough, Stefen Rodger, Marnie Faulkner, Donald Hicks and Rosemary Henderson.

The studio is currently using Unity to develop small mobile products for Android and iOS, such as its upcoming snowboarding title, as well as focusing on testing free-to-play social games.

Falconer says he and his team are also ready to tackle small projects and outsourcing tasks from companies looking for assistance.

“Our plan is to keep working hard and to continue developing and releasing products,” says Falconer.

“We’re really interested in working with new partners to develop great games. The obvious aim is to create a sustainable business from which we can grow in the coming years.”

The prototype space that Future Fossil currently occupies houses five other small games companies.
