GAMES MEDIA AWARDS: Kieron Gillen named Games Media Legend

Kieron Gillen was named Games Media Legend at last night’s Games Media Awards.

A comical, deceptive, speech from close friend and Premier PR boss Simon Byron heralded Gillen’s appearance on stage.

Gillen’s is a veteran of games journalism, having written for Wired, The Guardian, Edge, Official Xbox, Eurogamer and The Escapist. He began his career at PC Gamer, where he worked his way up the ranks to deputy editor.

He later founded PC gaming website Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

His most notable contribution to the games industry was his manifesto for ‘New Games Journalism,’ which Byron described on stage as a call to arms that encouraged ‘development of the artform’.

He left full-time games industry to focus on his work with Marvel, where he writes comics featuring X-Men, The Avengers and other well-known characters.

Gold Partners supporting the event included Xbox 360, Need For Speed Most Wanted, PlayStation, Wii U, Codemasters Racing, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and NCsoft.

Deep Silver signed up as Media Transport Partner, Trion’s Defiance was Pre-Drinks Party Host, Hitman Absolution hosted the After Show Party and Nordic’s Wii Sing 80s ran the popular rockaoke entertainment after the ceremony. Far Cry 3 was reception partner.

Meanwhile Gamescom and Indigo Pearl were event partners, with other sponsors including Green Man Gaming (Top Tweeter category), Precise (Coverage by a Mainstream Website), Sega (Games Writer of the Year), OnLive (Games Website) and THQ (Games Blog).
