Games Workshop announces new Warhammer 40K live-action TV series

Games Workshop has announced its working with Big Light Productions to develop a new live-action TV series based on the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. The series, which is entitled Eisenhorn after Warhammer character Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn, will see Big Light Productions CEO Frank Spotnitz – who created The Man in the High Castle – serve as executive producer and showrunner for the series.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Frank and his team at Big Light. Warhammer 40,000 has a massive global fanbase – they are a passionate community of Warhammer hobbyists who love to engage with our characters, stories and games,” said Games Workshop global head of marketing and media, Andy Smillie (thanks, GI.biz). “I’m truly delighted we are able to develop a show that will reward their loyalty.

“Inquisitor Eisenhorn represents one of the best-loved characters within our worlds, and we’re excited to share his exploits and adventures with audiences new and old. Frank and his outstanding team at Big Light have done amazing things with other properties, bringing complex worlds to the screen, and we can’t wait to see what our partnership produces for the grim darkness of Warhammer 40,000.”

As yet, no specific broadcaster has been announced, and a release window has also yet to be confirmed.

A live-action series based upon Square Enix’s MMO RPG Final Fantasy XIV is also in development by Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind, the company also bringing The Witcher to Netflix. The live-action television series will reportedly tell an original story set in the fantastic world of Eorzea. Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, Dinesh Shamdasani, Ben Lustig, and Jake Thornton will serve as executive producers, with the latter two also commissioned to write for the series.

“Final Fantasy XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into Final Fantasy for longtime fans and newcomers alike,” said Sony Pictures Television co-president, Chris Parnell, at the time of the announcement. “This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honour to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favourites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience.”
