Getting started with #IoT apps – online resources for devs

The future we’ve been promised is almost upon us, with connected devices aplenty arriving in the shops and in the home, such as fridges and home security devices. It’s action time for developers – getting a head start is critical for any coder hoping to build and sell apps for this new generation of smart devices.

Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to know how to get started. Developer programs, such as Intel’s IoT program, can really help those hoping to find out more and connect with like-minded developers across the world. The help available doesn’t stop there, though.

Coders looking for simple video how-tos could do worse than check out this series of video tutorials from IoT experts. Including Galileo 101, which gives a technical overview of Intel’s IoT development board, the subsequent videos walk through how to set up the kit, code in proper syntax and use variables and functions. If you don’t have the kit yet, you can get hold of it here.

For the more adventurous, there are already developer challenges and challenges specifically designed for hobbyists, students and entrepreneurial types wanting a piece of the action. The IoT Explorer Challenge is a great place to start – signing up will get you updates about events in your area.

And for the incurably curious, information abounds on the Internet of Things forums, where developers experimenting with IoT technology are already hanging out. Even if you’re not yet ready to take the plunge, reading the posts is a great way to get a flavour of the progress and challenges experienced by those already playing with the technology.
