GMAs Journalists’ Journalist nominees: Who is Ellie Gibson?

This year’s Games Media Awards on October 15th will see the games media vote on the night for their ‘Journalists’ Journalist’, from a shortlist of six industry standouts.

Ahead of the big night, MCV talks to nominee Ellie Gibson about her penchant for phallic humour, why video games are like animals and the challenge facing women in the industry

For the unaware, who are you and what do you do?

I spent nine years working at Eurogamer. I recently left to do the Scummy Mummies comedy show and podcast, because the world needs more of those.

What does it mean to be nominated for the Journalists’ Journalist prize at this year’s GMAs?

It is nice to be recognised for what is basically a decade’s worth of nob jokes.

What is the importance of recognising the achievements of the games media?

I’m not sure. I’m don’t know what I’ve achieved beyond the nob jokes, to be honest.

"The big challenge will be getting more women to write about games – and to prevent those already on the frontline from getting fed up and quitting."

Which parts of the industry are you most interested in covering and why?

Games about wild animals. Because they’re pointless, stupid and hilarious, like video games should be. Jambo! Safari is better than Destiny.

What games are you looking forward to this Winter?

Professional answer: Far Cry 4 and The Evil Within. Actual answer: Just Dance 2015 and SingStar Ultimate Party.

What are the biggest changes currently affecting the face of games media?

For me the big challenge, in light of recent events, will be getting more women to write about games – and to prevent those already on the frontline from getting fed up and quitting.
