Google Chrome becomes the world’s most popular browser

Having launched three and a half years ago, Google’s Chrome web browser has overtaken Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for the first time to become the world’s most popular browser.

That’s according to Statcounter, whose numbers show that Chrome had a higher average traffic number than IE for a seven-day period (May 14th-20th) for the first time ever.

Chrome has in fact bettered IE in Europe for the last two weeks, though both trail behind Mozilla’s Firefox in the region. IE remains the daddy in the US. IE also remains in control in the Oceanic region.

Chrome’s strongest regions are India and South America – Google’s browser has a 50 per cent share of the market in the latter.

If current trends continue then Chrome should still gain a market leading position in the world’s leading economies at some point in the future.
